The tawny owl is a large brown owl that can be found throughout England and Europe. Their large rounded heads lack ear tufts, and the facial disc surrounding their dark brown eyes are usually plain. Tawny owls are 37 to 46cm long with a wingspan of about 81 to 105cm. Although it is often claimed that the Tawny Owl has exceptional night vision, its retina is no more sensitive than a human’s. However, they do have asymmetrically placed ears to provide excellent directional hearing! Tawny Owls used to be mostly a woodland species, however, in recent times they have adapted to live almost anywhere there are trees!
